Regina Wickham
“I am a vessel maker; clay is the skin to contain a volume, defining and incorporating space. Glazes juxtapose color and texture: painting landscape, seascape, night sky.”
“The volumes and layers of the landscape of Washington Country inform my work as does the Chinese ceramic tradition which is my inspiration. I study their classic forms to understand the success of their curves, the space they envelop, and the space they exclude. I am a modern colorist painting my vessels with glazes that echo the earth and sky; making marks and drawing curves reflective of landscape.”
Regina Wickham has earned two degrees: a BA at the College of New Rochelle and a BFA from Bennington College, VT. Shortly after, she attended a summer workshop at Peter’s Valley Craftsmen, in New Jersey and has been working as a studio potter since.
She moved to Cambridge, NY to study with Stanley Rosen and Jane Ford Aebersold at Bennington College in the mid-1970s, after early studies at Greenwich House Potters in New York. She has attended workshops with Hui Ka Kwong; Robert Piepenburg, a leading Raku artist and author; Phil Rogers, and others. Since 1986 Regina has worked in the studios of Mugi Potters and Soho Potters in New York City. In 2000 she set up a studio at her home in Cambridge with a high-fire gas kiln.
