Joan Duff Bohrer

Currently I find my subject matter through random drawing and color application. I find my current focus is on birds, for I am interested in their non-verbal communication and industriousness and instinctive response to the seasons. I see them as examples of freedom in the natural world and like to think that some of this freedom of the spirit can be part of human life.

My paintings are arrived at by multi-layering line and color. Subject matter often includes birds, flowers, and words, as icons of fragility, transience and emotional association. I have been influenced by the direct, instinctual approach of children’s art.

Artist's Biography:

Joan Duff Bohrer was raised in New Jersey, earning her undergraduate degree from Bucknell University, PA and her Master’s Degree from Rutgers University, NJ. Most recently she studied with David Miller at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.

She has exhibited her work in the New York State Biennial in Albany, NY, the “Painting” Lectureship and one person show at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica, NY. She was also included in a ten person show in New York City’s Tribeca district and The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, NY. These two shows featured five upstate artists and five NYC artists.

Since 2001, she divides the year between Salem, NY and Dunedin, Florida. In Florida, she exhibits in two annual outdoor art shows: Tampa’s Gasparilla Arts Festival and St. Petersburg’s Main Sail Art Show. In addition to devotion to her artwork, she teaches a winter session at Dunedin Fine Art Center in Dunedin, Fl. One of her student’s states, “Joan is a most gifted, most talented, most accomplished artist and a fine art teacher. I have learned so much, and my art has improved so much, from her classes … that, I look forward to her classes each year!”

She has been described as an abstract painter with discernible references to the natural world. These include flowers and birds. Her paintings, often large, feature much random drawing and brilliant color. On her website, visitors can view her largest piece, 8’ tall by 6’ wide, done as a commission for a private collector.

Joan’s work has been collected by private collectors in New Jersey, New York, and Florida as well as the Ayco Financial Group and Chubb Insurance Co.
